2009 Conference

More than 200 professionals from across Western New York are attended the 11th Annual Family Violence Intervention Project conference “Safe at Home: Seeking Solutions for Adult and Child Victims of Family Violence” on May 12, at the Conference Center Niagara Falls.

Keynote speaker Geraldine Crisci, MSW, LCSW, a clinician from Toronto, Ontario, addressed the issue: “How Serious is the Sexual Behavior, Juvenile Offending Problem and What Should be Done About It?”  Ms. Crisci, specializes in the assessment and treatment of child sexual abuse and has developed protocols for trauma assessment and the assessment of sexualized behavior in children.  She is co-author of “Paper Dolls and Paper Airplanes: Therapeutic Exercises for Sexually Traumatized Children,” which is in its fifth printing.

Allie Phillips, director of public policy for the American Humane Association, discussed “The Link Between Animal Cruelty and Human Violence.” Ms. Phillips was recently featured on NBC-TV’s “Today” regarding this issue.

Ms. Crisci and Ms. Phillips also conducted afternoon workshops.  They were joined by Margaret A. Burt, an attorney specializing in family law; Patti McLain of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children; detectives Michael Hockwater and Terence Griffin of the Cheektowaga Police Department; FBI Special Agent J. R. Manes; and Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron J. Mango.

The conference was sponsored by the Niagara County Family Violence Intervention Project, Child Advocacy Center of Niagara and Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center.  Other conference supporters include the Niagara County Department of Mental Health, Niagara County Rape Crisis Services; Catholic Charities of Buffalo’s Niagara County Services Division; the Niagara Falls School District’s Focus on Families program; and the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office.
